Throughout these years I’ve been in the digital photography world (four, since I bought my D70) one of the things that has been nagging my mind was the lack of a normal lens from Nikon targeted to digital SLR cameras. Something that’s almost mandatory the film world.
Until now the only option was the 30mm lens from Sigma, a nice lens but has the “problem” of allowing a f/1.4 aperture, which means it’s not that cheap. It seems Nikon finally woken up and released something with the same angle of view of those 50mm lenses in full frame film SLR cameras.

I bought myself a new toy!

This weekend I bought myself a new toy!
For some time I felt the need of yet another camera, something between my fully featured but also bigger and bulkier DSLR and my ultra-portable, always available but less powerful camera phone. So when I started reading all the so many people thrilled I got curious about the Panasonic LX3, and a few reviews later I ended up buying it.
I haven’t tested it properly, but for now it seems it’s exactly what I was looking for: it’s quite small and portable, only slightly bigger than the regular compact camera, but with a helluva lens and a few other features aimed to please photographers.
It’s all about the glass
Thomas Hawk was interviewed for a Mahalo Daily episode on basic photo tips. All of them are very important and should be followed almost religiously, but one caught my eye:

This so true! Too often I find myself trying giving the same equipment advice to friends blinded by the quantity of lenses available in some DSLR kits: one good lens is better than two or three cheap lenses.
PS – Tip #9 probably is the most important: take lots and lots and lots of photos. Persistence leads to perfection and, quoting Henri Cartier-Bresson, your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.

Resolution list for 2008
A new year is now beginning and that usually means New Years Resolutions, so here are mine, just the geek oriented and in no particular order:
- Finish TemujinPhoto, finally I’m working on it and in a few weeks I hope to have a working beta.
- Probably this is the year I’ll take a certification, most likely a Microsoft Certified Professional. Probably…
- Take photos.
- Must dive into .Net 3.5 and LINQ.
- Been thinking about creating a desktop client for Remember The Milk in WPF, I’m needing one and the guys at RTM have a neat API (WPF is for learning something new).
- Must buy a tripod, need to do night shots.
- Get a taste of EJB 3.0 and the Spring 2.5, just a small taste to check what I’ve been missing on the Java world.
- Put my reading up to date, I still haven’t read this one (no need to buy me a copy, I already own one and it has been gathering dust for some time).
- Take more photos: night photos, motion photos, street photos, concept photos and all kinds of photos I haven’t been doing lately.
- There has been some ideas to make a few short movies, I sure hope we can turn them real. Another reason to buy a tripod…
- Probably dump Windows on my laptop completely, I’m getting happier with Ubuntu everyday.
There’s nothing like turning your New Year resolutions public, or at least part of them…
What’s in my kit bag?
Photocritic is asking what do we carry around in the kit bag.
For me it’s simple, I like to travel light so I prefer to keep things to the minimum, starting with the bag, I don’t like backpacks because I don’t feel tool comfortable moving around with them in crowed places.
Either with my digital or film camera I have a typical setup for the gear I carry around:
- Camera body (obviously…)
- Prime lens – A must have, can’t go anywhere without it! It’s fast, has superior optical quality, I love to use shallow depth of field and, at last, it’s a really small and light lens.
- "Regular" zoom lens – The versatile classical zoom lens, the wider the better.
- Filters – Not many, just the UV (always attached to the lens, never forget that) and a polarizer.
- Basic cleaning stuff – Tissues and a blower, all you need for those quick jobs.
- Tripod – The smallest one I can find.
- Media – Some spare memory cards or film, otherwise the rest of the gear is quite useless.
For my digital camera still I haven’t got an extra battery, which caused me some problems a few times in the past (specially while traveling), that’s one of the reasons I’m keeping my film camera: it’s completely manual and battery-less!

The nice thing of having a Leica M in the digital world is that my long time dream of owning one will not die with the expectable demise of film in the next few years.

Leica M Digital
This may be the future Leica M7, a traditional M Series camera from Leica but with a digital sensor in the place where 35 mm film used to be found…
…tradition isn’t what it used to be.
PS – If there’s anyone wanting to move from 35 mm film to digital and have one of these to throw away email me, I’ll gladly receive that useless piece of garbage… 
Zeiss Lenses for Nikon F Mount
After a mini-teaser campaign and numerous leaks it’s now official. Zeiss has announced that is to introduce a range of new ‘ZF’ lenses which will have a Nikon F Mount (although it’s not clear at this stage how much communication will go on between the lens and body).
That’s what I call good news! I wonder how much these beauties will cost?

Ladies and gents, the Sigma 10-20mm DC!!
I have a passion for wide angle lenses! This one is probably my next buy, although the Nikkor 12-24mm DX still is the main object of my desire, but that €€€ issue is keeping me away from it.
