The Future of WCF

“WCF started with a clear bias towards SOAP, WS-* protocols, and other heavyweight standards that were being popularized at the time but had not been ubiquitously adopted.
(…)
I didn’t believe though that you could force the world to use a single approach for building web services.”

Nicholas Allen

Windows Communication Foundation has to be one of the most interesting pieces of the .Net universe released in recent years, mostly for being a huge improvement over the previous web service model in .Net. So when one the minds behind WCF writes about the framework’s future it’s certainly worth a closer look.

Mocking web services with SoapUI

The latest release of my favorite web service testing tool has a really interesting feature:

Support for Mocking of Web Services directly from within soapUI. Mock Services can be run either from inside soapUI or with one of the IDE/Maven/CommandLine plugins.

In a service oriented architecture is usual, and desirable, to have contract definition (i.e. the web service WSDL and schema) before the service implementation is available or, at least, is robust enough for testing. Having such a tool makes the development of clients for such services much faster and removes the part of the pressure of service implementators.

Mocking web services along with other nice features like unit testing or load testing makes SoapUI probably the best tool for web service testing around, it was the only Java tool I was able to push in the Microsoft-based environment I’m working at.

TechDays 2007, day 3… and final thoughts

With some delay here’s the "review", and my final thoughts, of this years edition of the biggest Microsoft based event in Portugal.
First of all, the "third day" review. Instead of detailing all the sessions I’ve attended, which could become a bit boring, I’ll just point two of them, even if both of them were from people I’m familiar with. The first came from my fellow and co-worker and covered the anguishes and the doubts of a software architect, but in a rather curious way: in a psychiatrist session. The other was from a former college teacher which dedicated a whole session to security in Windows Workflow Foundation, and it was one of the most professional sessions I’ve been the those three days (and the only good one about WCF).

And now for my final thoughts, the overall impression was good and I was able to grab some stuff about all those things I couldn’t turn my attention in the last months: Windows Presentation Foundation, ASP.Net Ajax and LINQ. But, on the other side, there were two problems: the Hands On Labs simply hasn’t worked, a major flop, and the quality of the sessions dedicated to WCF and Windows Workflow Foundation wasn’t that good, almost looked like the event was driven towards "show-off" and "eye candy" technologies (like WPF or Ajax).

:Phoetry:

New Year for many people means new resolutions and new projects, although I’ve abandoned new year resolutions a long time ago I’m starting the year with a brand new project.

It’s a joint blog that will combine images and words (photography and poetry to be a bit more accurate) in a way that isn’t clear for us, yet… I’ll be in charge of all the photography related matters, unless my writing skills dramatically improve in the near future allowing me to contribute with something else.

I’m eager to see how this will evolve in the next months.

TemujinPhoto

It has begun!
I’m already working in the port of my photography site Temujin Photo to Ruby On Rails, nowadays its just plain HTML. The design will remain the same, the idea is to add a bit more of flexibility on the server side, implement the current external services (stuff like the newsletter and the guestbook) and do a couple of other things; all of this while exploring a new web framework.

As soon as it’s over I’ll be able to move it to the future domain (www.temujinphoto.com) and possibly with some surprises.

I’ll be posting the updates on this here.
